Key Insights from Our Blog Survey

First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude for the overwhelming response to my inaugural reader survey. After two and a half years of dedicated blogging, I’d always envisioned conducting one, but a genuine apprehension about the results held me back. A blog, in many ways, serves as a personal sanctuary, an outlet for self-expression. Yet, as someone who openly shares aspects of her life online, I understand that not all feedback will be positive. Any seasoned blogger can attest to how a single critical comment can disproportionately impact one’s confidence, making you question the value of your entire endeavor. However, I also reasoned that anyone taking the time to complete a survey likely already enjoys the content enough to stick around. Those who don’t resonate with the site probably wouldn’t bother. Over the years, your encouragement has been a constant source of motivation. In moments of frustration, a heartfelt comment could instantly lift me from despair—like those days when a pipe stubbornly leaked, tempting me to abandon my hammer entirely. This realization solidified my decision: it was time to amplify your voices and truly understand what my dedicated readers were seeking. While some of the results confirmed my expectations, others offered genuinely surprising insights. So, without further ado, let’s dive into what we discovered, shall we?

Unveiling Our Community: Key Survey Statistics

I was genuinely astonished by the sheer volume of responses received, with a few still trickling in even after the initial cutoff for writing this post (rest assured, I’m still reading every single one!). My initial hope was to gather around 50 to 75 responses, and you all far exceeded that, proving my cautious estimates delightfully wrong! This milestone also presented a fantastic opportunity for me to dabble in creating an infographic—a first for me, and admittedly, I was navigating uncharted territory. While they are incredibly fun to put together, my appreciation for the meticulous craft of graphic design friends has grown immeasurably. These visual representations offer a quick glance into the demographics and preferences of our vibrant community, providing invaluable data that will help shape the future direction of this blog.

The survey revealed that our readership is predominantly based in the U.S., accounting for a significant 85% of respondents. Following that, roughly 4% each hail from Canada, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and other international regions, showcasing a wonderfully diverse global presence. It’s fascinating to see how far our little corner of the internet reaches!

Intriguingly, a substantial portion of you couldn’t recall how you initially discovered this blog. While memory lapses can sometimes be associated with overindulgence, I assure you, these two observations are entirely unrelated. Or perhaps, they are, in a delightfully mysterious way.

What You Cherish Most About Our Authentic DIY Blog

The overarching sentiment from the survey results is a profound appreciation for the honesty and transparency I strive to maintain. In the often-curated world of home decor and DIY blogs, you value the unfiltered reality presented here. I might not always showcase projects from pristine start to perfect finish before embarking on the next task. Some days, my progress might be limited to a mundane snapshot of my dining room, far from the dramatic reveals often seen elsewhere. Yet, what truly resonates with you is the authentic narrative of a real person balancing life outside of home projects. While a compelling before-and-after transformation will undeniably always capture more attention than the tedious process of peeling wallpaper, you distinctly appreciate that this site steers clear of being a “cookie-cutter home décor blog,” as one survey taker aptly put it. This feedback underscores the importance of genuine storytelling in the digital age.

Our home is a constant work in progress, a testament to the real-life challenges and occasional setbacks inherent in hands-on DIY. You expressed immense satisfaction in seeing not only the triumphs but also the struggles and the downright ugly moments. This couldn’t be more encouraging, as sharing the full spectrum of the DIY journey is precisely my mission! I know countless others are out there, learning to tackle projects independently—whether driven by budget constraints, personal growth aspirations, or simply the thrill of a new challenge. My goal is to demonstrate that undertaking these projects *is* achievable, and that it’s perfectly normal to encounter missteps, feel frustrated, and have to try again. Knowing that this approach inspires you is incredibly rewarding and reaffirms the value of an honest narrative in the DIY community.

Many of you also identify as fellow “compulsive project starters,” finding kinship in the shared experience of having multiple initiatives underway simultaneously. Conversely, a small segment of readers expressed a preference for more linear project progressions, and that feedback is equally valid. Just like life itself, this house often has numerous projects unfolding concurrently. It’s heartening to know that a majority of you believe that any progress, no matter how disjointed, is still progress, acknowledging the real-world nature of extensive home renovations and DIY endeavors.

Beyond the project-focused content, you offered incredibly kind words about my writing style and personality. Reading these comments was truly heartwarming. My aspiration for this blog has always been to create a conversational space, making readers feel like they’re engaging with a friend who’s not an expert, but someone earnestly navigating challenges and figuring things out. I never want it to feel like I’m lecturing. It brings me immense joy to discover that simply being myself is more than enough to forge that connection and build this wonderful community.

Hello. That’s mah face.

And, as expected, the “before and after” project reveals consistently rank high on your list of favorite content. This works out quite conveniently, as the satisfaction of seeing a completed transformation is a powerful motivator for both myself and our readership!

Constructive Feedback: What You’d Like to See Less Of

(This section contained the answers I was most apprehensive about reading, yet paradoxically, I devoured this column in its entirety before any other feedback.)

Encouragingly, a significant majority of you either left this section blank, stated that you didn’t have a least favorite aspect, or simply requested more frequent posting. Even then, most responses were accompanied by incredibly understanding notes, acknowledging that my graduate school commitments and full-time work schedule contributed to any inconsistencies. Many of you even expressed sentiments like, “Who cares what I don’t like? It’s YOUR blog!” To which I can only respond: Thank you. It is an incredibly reassuring feeling to know that I’m not disappointing a large segment of my audience by putting my life and work out there. I used to manage a posting schedule of once or twice daily, typically around 1 AM, Monday through Saturday, which was usually when I’d finish writing each night. However, it’s true that the added demands of school this past year stretched my capacity thin. My goal for 2013 is to return to a more consistent schedule, and I truly appreciate your understanding when life inevitably throws curveballs.

A specific piece of feedback came from twelve respondents (approximately 5%) who indicated they didn’t particularly enjoy my Saturday inspiration posts or weekly shopping posts, where I’d share items that caught my eye or intrigued me. Based on this, it seems this is the first area slated for adjustment. I won’t eliminate it entirely, as I genuinely love trend-spotting, and some of you *did* express enjoyment for them. You’ll still see occasional shopping or trend-focused posts, like the one exploring faceted decor. I’ve even devised a slight twist to the old formula to keep it fresh. However, these will no longer be a regular weekly feature. After all, platforms like Pinterest now serve as excellent resources for instant shopping inspiration and trend discovery.

There *was* one commenter, however, who managed to fulfill that initial fear I mentioned—the possibility of receiving feedback that would genuinely catch me off guard. And you know what? I read it, and to my surprise, I wasn’t as hurt, embarrassed, or upset as I had anticipated. The simple truth is, I won’t be able to please everyone, and honestly, I’d find myself incredibly bored if I even tried. I don’t spend my time reading blogs I don’t enjoy, and I certainly don’t expect you to either. This realization was far easier to process than I’d imagined, especially after internalizing all your overwhelmingly kind words!

Charting the Course: Your Desires for 2013 Content

Your valuable input has provided a clear roadmap for the exciting content to come in the new year. We’re eager to build upon the themes that resonate most with our community and explore new avenues based on your suggestions:

More Personal Posts: Throughout 2012, I made a conscious effort to open up about my breakup and the journey of navigating DIY projects as a single woman. This was a profoundly challenging and uncomfortable experience for me. Not only did many of you relate deeply to these candid shares, but you actively requested more! Therefore, a key objective for 2013 is to integrate more of these personal narratives. I also believe that stepping in front of the camera more frequently and creating video content will foster an even deeper connection. In the coming months, expect updates on my dating life (prepare to be delightfully underwhelmed), more insights into my family dynamics, practical tips on how I manage my demanding workload, and a peek into the day-to-day habits that sustain my DIY passion. For those eager to delve deeper, some of my favorite personal reflections can be found on my About Me page, including a collection of random facts about me (shared shortly after the breakup announcement) and a lighthearted list of “Things I Hate/Things I Love.”

More Tutorials and Finished Projects: This request came as no surprise, and I couldn’t agree more! Even my mom, who is acutely aware of my busy schedule, noted a desire for more completed project reveals (though she also claimed to be under 18 on her survey, making her a less-than-reliable source on certain fronts… and quite terrible at making cakes). A significant number of my projects remained unfinished last year, which understandably limited the tutorials I could post, as incomplete guides often generate more questions than answers. However, I am genuinely optimistic that 2013 will be the year for transforming more rooms and completing more projects, so prepare for an influx of detailed tutorials as I embark on exciting new endeavors!

More Charlie: You all adore my little kangaroo-like bundle of playful chaos almost as much as I do! Rest assured, Charlie will be making more regular, charming appearances to brighten your day.

Adorable dog Charlie, a regular blog feature

More Posts in General: Achieving a more disciplined, consistent posting schedule this year will require a heightened level of commitment, but I am absolutely determined to do my best. Fingers crossed for a productive and engaging year ahead!

Your Burning Questions, Answered: A Glimpse into My World

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all your thoughtful questions—some serious, some wonderfully silly. The two most frequently asked questions revolved around:

  • How do you manage to juggle all the responsibilities on your plate?
  • What’s the latest on your dating life?

I am already planning dedicated posts to address both of these popular inquiries in detail. However, there were also several other amusing questions that might not fit into the upcoming video update for my About Me page. So, to wrap up this post with a touch of humor, I’ll answer a few of those here:

What would you do with a (very ugly) gold metal lamp?

My immediate thought? Drink until it miraculously transforms into something beautiful. Failing that, a generous coat of vibrant yellow spray paint. Or, perhaps, a dignified donation to Goodwill, followed by the acquisition of a more appealing lamp during the same trip.

Regarding laser hair removal (presumed from my mention in this post): how many sessions, and how long does it last?

Sessions were scheduled approximately every six to eight weeks and spanned a full two years. I have just two sessions remaining. My sister underwent the treatments before I did, and we both experienced excellent results—around 90% permanent hair loss in the treated areas. It’s not painless, but absolutely worth it for the long-term benefits.

What’s your favorite type of wood?

Too many inappropriate jokes are currently vying for space in my mind to even formulate a serious answer for this one!

Why don’t you feature more seagulls?

You are absolutely right. I have clearly overlooked a crucial demographic here. I shall address this oversight with utmost urgency!
