As the final days of the year draw to a close, a unique blend of reflection and anticipation often settles in. It’s a time for catharsis, for shedding the weight of the past year’s challenges, celebrating cherished memories and significant accomplishments, and meticulously planning for an even brighter future. While it’s all too easy to fixate on the unfulfilled aspirations, I found myself experiencing a pleasant surprise this year. Upon a thorough review, I realized that I had not only meticulously outlined but also successfully achieved a substantial number of the goals I had set for myself back in 2015. This journey of personal growth and home transformation has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to share the highlights and insights from a year marked by tangible progress and meaningful shifts.

This year’s successes span across several key areas of my life, demonstrating a holistic approach to personal development and home improvement. My journey began with setting clear intentions for my personal well-being and professional growth through blogging, which naturally intertwined with my ambitious DIY projects around the house. Let’s delve into these achievements, starting with the more personal aspects that laid the foundation for everything else.
Embracing Personal Growth: Work-Life Balance and Decluttering for a Better Life
One of my primary personal objectives for the year was to establish a clearer distinction between my work and home life, to declutter my surroundings, and to actively seek out opportunities to get outside. Transitioning to working from home presented its own set of challenges, often blurring the lines between personal and professional time. My goal was to intentionally create boundaries and foster a sense of freedom from the perpetual feeling of being overwhelmed by “busyness.” While achieving a perfect “balance” might be an elusive concept, I made significant strides in recognizing my need for breaks and, crucially, in taking them when necessary. This subtle yet profound shift has had a transformative impact on my overall well-being and productivity.

To actively combat the sedentary nature of working from home and foster a healthier work-life dynamic, I proactively sought out structured physical activities. Joining a weekly running group provided both the physical outlet I craved and a crucial element of external accountability. Similarly, becoming part of a weekly softball team not only got me out of the house but also introduced a fixed schedule that demanded better time management and interaction with others. These commitments inadvertently helped in decluttering my schedule and mind, rather than adding to the chaos. While I wouldn’t universally recommend adding *more* activities to simplify life, for me, it opened doors to invaluable new friendships – a much-needed addition to my life this year. Looking ahead to 2016, I’m already planning to join another softball program, aiming to further diversify my routine and social circle. Although my attempts at dating proved less fruitful this year, experiencing more “backslides” than advancements, the overall push to step out of my comfort zone was a significant personal victory.
Beyond local engagements, I also prioritized travel, embracing opportunities to explore and reconnect. Some of these journeys were to see familiar faces, though not always human, reminding me of the simple joys found in varied experiences and environments. These trips provided essential breaks and fresh perspectives, reinforcing the importance of stepping away from the daily grind.

The theme of decluttering extended far beyond physical objects; it encompassed a holistic inventory of my life – professionally, financially, socially, and physically. I made a conscious effort to purge more than I acquired, resulting in a remarkable 300% increase in trips to Goodwill compared to the previous year. This deliberate act of letting go created space, not just in my home, but also in my mind. Socially, I invested more time in fostering deeper connections with friends I truly valued, while courageously detaching from more toxic relationships. While there’s always room for improvement, especially in maintaining a minimalist approach, the progress made in 2015 was undeniable. This momentum has inspired me to carry this essential decluttering goal forward into 2016, confident that the sustained effort will continue to yield positive results.
The Great Purge continued yesterday. Cannot find my keys today. Proving once again that in this house, cleaning is a punishable offense.

Blogging with Authenticity: Connecting, Creating, and Sharing the Journey
My aspirations for the blog centered on increasing posting frequency, embracing more honest storytelling, and injecting greater creativity into my content. While I didn’t adhere to a perfectly rigid publishing schedule, I believe I poured more of my authentic self into the blog this year, and I truly feel that this investment paid off in terms of personal satisfaction and reader connection. I found immense joy in crafting certain posts, and I sincerely hope that joy translated to my readers. Crucially, I allowed myself the vulnerability to share my grief over losing a loved one, which, while deeply personal, fostered profound connections and led to incredibly insightful discussions. It’s clear that if a topic truly resonates and feels worth discussing, I will share it, and the supportive responses from my incredible readers—who, as always, truly ROCK—continue to fuel this open and honest approach to blogging.

This year also saw a conscious push to undertake more creative projects for the blog. Though perhaps not as numerous as initially planned, these endeavors were incredibly fulfilling. Creativity, by its very nature, is dynamic, constantly morphing and inspiring new forms over time. The experience reaffirmed my commitment to embedding more innovative and unique projects into my content strategy for 2016, ensuring the blog remains a vibrant platform for both practical DIY and artistic expression.

Home Transformations: Celebrating DIY Project Successes and Enhancements
As this is primarily a DIY and home improvement blog, let’s dive into the tangible transformations that took place around the house. These projects represent countless hours of planning, problem-solving, and hands-on effort, each contributing to a more functional, beautiful, and personalized living space.
The Kitchen: The Heart of the Home Reimagined
The kitchen, often considered the heart of the home, saw remarkable progress this year. I successfully managed to complete the wall treatments, install essential window coverings, and tackle numerous other crucial tasks. This diligent effort culminated in a space that was not only aesthetically improved but also fully functional, to the point where I could even decorate it for the holidays! While a few finishing touches and exciting surprises are still in the pipeline, the core objective of restoring the kitchen to a usable state has been thoroughly achieved. I can now brew my morning coffee without the lingering concern of drywall dust, a small victory that speaks volumes about the progress made.

The Laundry Room: Elevating a Utilitarian Space
Even utilitarian spaces deserve attention and thoughtful design. My laundry room received a significant upgrade with the installation of elegant crown molding, the creation of practical and stylish floating shelves, and the addition of vibrant plants to bring life into the room. I also commenced building a custom countertop, a project that, while not yet fully complete, has transformed the room considerably. Considering this wasn’t my sole focus, the progress is quite impressive, showcasing how even incremental improvements can have a big impact.

The Office: Cultivating a Productive Workspace
The home office, a critical hub for productivity, also underwent notable improvements. While still a work in progress, the room became significantly more organized and inspiring. I successfully installed new bookshelves, maximizing vertical storage and bringing order to my growing collection of resources. Additionally, clever storage solutions were integrated behind the door, efficiently utilizing every inch of space. I’m particularly excited to soon reveal the new DIY light fixture, which promises to further enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of this essential workspace.

Landscaping and Exterior Work: Boosting Curb Appeal and Functionality
Among all my home goals for 2015, the landscaping and exterior work undoubtedly deserve the “Most Improved” award. This area saw some of the most dramatic and impactful transformations. A significant undertaking was the strategic removal of troublesome pine trees from both the front and back yards. This not only improved the overall aesthetics but also significantly reduced year-round maintenance for the yard and roof, preventing potential damage and clearing sightlines. This crucial step laid the groundwork for further exterior enhancements.

Following the tree removal, the necessary repair work on the exterior siding was meticulously completed, restoring the home’s facade and protecting it from the elements. This was a vital structural and aesthetic improvement that vastly enhanced the curb appeal.

Further refining the outdoor space, the front trees were professionally trimmed back, creating a cleaner, more inviting entrance. A strategic decision was made to bring in a reliable landscaping professional to handle some of the more arduous and time-consuming tasks. This allowed me to concentrate my DIY efforts on other projects that required my specific skills and passion, optimizing both time and resources.

In addition to these major overhauls, I also dedicated time to creating beautiful and functional DIY garden beds along the back yard fence line, adding structure and greenery to the space. The garden area along the side of the house also saw significant improvements, becoming a more vibrant and welcoming zone. My dedicated landscaper has been instrumental in preparing the backyard for even more exciting improvements next year, a prospect I am incredibly enthusiastic about. The groundwork is laid, and I’m eagerly anticipating the fresh transformations the next 365 days will bring to my outdoor sanctuary. More details on those plans will undoubtedly follow!

Diverse Room Enhancements and Essential Organization
My passion for DIY means I rarely stay focused on a single room for too long. This year was no exception, as several other areas of the house also received impactful improvements. A notable project was the installation of a stunning new copper light fixture in the dining room. This small yet significant change dramatically altered the ambiance of the space, adding a touch of modern elegance and warmth, proving that thoughtful lighting can redefine a room’s character.

Furthermore, I recognized a critical need to streamline my DIY processes, which hinged significantly on having a meticulously organized workspace. This led to a comprehensive overhaul of the garage. After an extensive cleaning and reorganization effort, I strategically constructed an inexpensive yet highly functional lumber rack, ensuring all my wood supplies were neatly stored and easily accessible. A new pegboard wall was installed, providing versatile storage for tools and smaller items, keeping them off the workbench and within reach. Finally, a crucial lighting upgrade in the garage transformed the space, providing significantly more illumination for all my projects and making it a far more inviting and efficient workshop.

And perhaps one of the most heartwarming achievements was finally being able to decorate my home for Christmas! For the first time, my house was sufficiently organized and free of construction clutter – no paint cans or step ladders obstructing the festive cheer. This simple act of holiday decorating felt like a grand finale, a true testament to the year’s hard work in creating a more livable and enjoyable home. Score for 2015!
