Fixing and Sealing Compromised Drywall

This week marks a significant milestone in our ongoing kitchen renovation saga. After what feels like an eternity, the motivation to tackle the formidable kitchen walls has finally arrived! It’s no secret that some of you have been patiently (or impatiently!) awaiting progress on this crucial space. Following the satisfying completion of the dining room, I confess I hit a bit of a DIY slump, particularly when it came to the thought of more skim coating. That initial burst of energy seemed to dissipate, leaving me questioning my sanity for taking on such a repetitive, albeit rewarding, task. Yet, here we are, fueled by determination and the vision of a beautifully transformed kitchen.

The Skim Coating Marathon: A Journey from Tedious to Triumphant

Every DIY enthusiast experiences those moments of pure joy when a project comes together, and then there are the phases that test your resolve. For me, skim coating has evolved into one of those challenging yet ultimately gratifying endeavors. What once felt like a novel technique has become a recurring theme in my home improvement journey, largely due to the pervasive issue of old, ugly wallpaper damage. From the bathroom (1, 2) to the guest bedroom (3) and the dining room (4), each space presented its own battle against stubborn adhesives and torn drywall paper. The sheer repetitive nature of sanding, patching, and skim coating multiple times a year can certainly drain one’s “DIY mojo.”

However, I am absolutely thrilled to announce that this kitchen represents the *last* room requiring this extensive wall preparation. The end is in sight! While I still occasionally fantasize about a team of tiny, efficient DIY elves appearing overnight to magically complete the work, the reality is a testament to perseverance. I know hiring a professional is an option, but for those of us who prioritize time and the immense pride of a job well done over simply throwing money at a problem, doing it yourself becomes the only true path. It’s a stubborn streak, perhaps, but it’s deeply ingrained in my approach to home renovation.

The silver lining to this repeated effort is undeniable: I’ve become quite proficient at skim coating. Each subsequent project has been completed faster and with a smoother, more professional finish. This journey of continuous improvement has also led me to discover superior products and techniques that make the process significantly more manageable and the results far more impressive.

A Breakthrough in Drywall Prep: The RX-35 Sealer/Primer

How to Seal Damaged Drywall with RX-35 Sealer/Primer
RX-35 Sealer/Primer for damaged drywall: a true game-changer in achieving perfectly smooth walls.

Among my most valuable discoveries is this exceptional porous surface sealer/primer. For anyone contending with torn drywall paper and the frustration of air bubbles during skim coating, this product is a revelation. It effectively seals and preps the wall, creating an ideal base for subsequent layers. My initial experience with it during the dining room renovation (where I was still learning its full potential) showed promise, even with a few minor bubbles still popping up, which were easily rectified.

However, the true magic of the RX-35 Sealer/Primer became evident in the kitchen. This time, I applied it to an entire wall *before* commencing any skim coating – a crucial change from my previous method where I only discovered the product after the first coat was already on. The results have been nothing short of astonishing. I haven’t encountered a single air bubble in the kitchen walls thus far. This sealer acts almost like a powerful adhesive, locking down the damaged paper fibers and creating an impermeable surface that prevents air from becoming trapped beneath the skim coat. It dramatically reduces the time and effort spent on fixing imperfections, leading to a much smoother, more professional finish right from the start.

I want to be completely transparent: while there’s an affiliate link to the product listing that might earn me a small commission if you click through and make a purchase, my endorsement of this product is entirely genuine. The manufacturers have no idea who I am, and I receive no direct payment from them for this review. My enthusiasm stems purely from the product’s outstanding performance – it’s genuinely a “schoolgirl crush” on a home improvement tool! If you’re facing significant drywall damage, especially from wallpaper removal, I cannot recommend the RX-35 Sealer/Primer highly enough. It simplifies a complex task and ensures a far superior outcome.

My Furry Co-Pilot’s Mishap: Charlie’s Vet Visit and Recovery

Amidst the dust and drywall compound, life, as always, threw a curveball in the form of my beloved furry sidekick. This week brought an unexpected, and rather stressful, visit to the vet for my darling Charlie. On Monday night, I noticed she was favoring one of her paws, and upon closer inspection, I discovered she had painfully split one of her dew claws. The most likely culprit? A particularly enthusiastic romp during our recent visit to the dog park. Ouch indeed!

Anyone who knows Charlie knows she’s an anxious dog by nature, but at the vet’s office, her anxiety levels shot up to an unprecedented “11.” She absolutely freaked out at anyone attempting to get close to her injured paw, turning into a furry tornado that shed an entire coat’s worth of hair all over the perplexed doctors and nurses. It took a team of four of us to gently but firmly hold her down long enough to clip off the damaged claw. It was a harrowing experience for everyone involved, especially poor Charlie.

Following the procedure, Charlie was prescribed some light pain medication to ensure her comfort and a course of antibiotics to prevent infection as her paw heals over the next week or so. She’s expected to make a full recovery, which is a huge relief. However, this whole ordeal has essentially become the most expensive manicure I’ve ever “purchased,” and rather ironically, it wasn’t even for me! Such is the life of a devoted pet owner.

And, of course, the infamous “cone of shame” has made its inevitable appearance. This essential accessory prevents her from licking at her wound, especially when I’m not able to supervise her constantly. I admit, seeing her in it fills me with a pang of guilt – her eyes convey the most heartbreaking, “how could you do this to me?” look I’ve ever seen. It feels like the meanest thing I’ve ever had to do to her, even though I know it’s for her own good.

Thankfully, after a brief adjustment period, Charlie seems to be adapting well to her new temporary headwear. She’s slowly returning to her usual happy, playful self, particularly enjoying our car rides, where the cone doesn’t seem to bother her nearly as much. Her resilience is truly admirable, and I’m looking forward to the day she can ditch the cone and get back to full, unrestricted dog park adventures.
